Gordon Brown says cannabis should be moved up a class

British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, said this morning that the government needs to force the message that cannabis is "unacceptable". Brown has received a report from The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) on cannabis and is still in the process of deciding whether or not to up the class of the drug from C to B.

"I don't think that the previous studies took into account that so much of the cannabis on the streets is now of a lethal quality and we really have got to send out a message to young people -- this is not acceptable," Brown said.

"I have always been very strongly of the view that cannabis is unacceptable and we have got to send a message," he added.

The council have requested that the class of cannabis stay at C and not move up. If Brown goes against them, it could create much controversy.

I have to say that I'm with all of the pot heads on this one, Brown's assumed decision is ridiculous. Why not bump up the class of alcohol to A while you're at it Gordon? Alcohol is far more dangerous than a bit of pot. It is the reason why so many people are killed in road accidents, it is the number 1 cause of drug induced Liver Disease, it creates more of a dependence than cannabis, alcohol promotes violent behaviour, and yet the government isn't stopping any one from boozing up down at the pub every single night!

There are some people that live inside their local pub (bar): every waking moment is based around alcohol. Then there are those that work as lawyers or doctors and feel they deserve to go through one or two bottles of Pinot when they get home because they are oh so "stressed". Wine is even one of the most common gifts people bring to one another for any occasion! If alcohol is that acceptable, in spite of being incredibly dangerous, why is Brown on the witch hunt for cannabis?

I was unlucky enough to live in San Diego for a while last year. Instead of alcohol being the drug of recreation, pot was. After a long day at work, friends of mine would pass around the bong, instead of opening a six pack of beer. Cancer patients I knew personally would light up a joint to help induce hunger so they could eat. Even though the hospital was already prescribing a pill which had some cannabis inside of it, the stuff on the street got the job done properly. Without pot, the entire population of Ocean Beach would be completely miserable! Not one person there ever lit up a cigarette. Never. That was one thing I found beneficial of living with pot heads. At least no one was killing themselves with tobacco and nicotine. I haven't even touched on the class of cigarettes, but I believe they too are FAR more harmful than cannabis.

My point is, you are never going to stop people from getting addicted . Why not let people induce relaxation with cannabis instead of with deadlier drugs? What is the point in pinning cannabis to the wall, when alcohol gets a free pass?

I'm guessing Gordon Brown has a large scotch before ending his long work day, after splitting a couple of bottles of wine with his wife over dinner. That is why alcohol is not being chased at this point in time and probably never will.

I agree with most of Ida's remarks. However, the crux of the matter is the dangerous cannabis now being supplied. The solution is to make the safe variety legal and bring it under the same strict controls as tobacco and booze. After all, the consumer must be protected. Then, by whatever means, concentrate on ensuring that the cannabis which is harmful is not produced - this should ensure that it soon disappears as, with a legal variety easily available, there will, hopefully, be no demand for it. Then tax it in the same way as cigarettes. If this is not done, and the dangerous cannabis continues to be sold on the streets, then Gordon Brown has no option but to upgrade it.

Thanks for your comment, but I just have to say that even though the production of alcohol seems controlled, I don't think it is. They still are selling hard liquor like absinthe in super markets in the United Kingdom. I don't think I need to explain the danger in that. Not to mention all of the other alcoholic beverages widely available as well. If you do your research, you will understand that alcohol produces far more ghastly results than cannabis!
